I am not and never have been a serious walker - more of a stroller really so the attraction of the Parish walking group is that the walks are planned to include strollers like me – not too demanding physically in length, terrain or pace and always in picturesque surroundings.  On the afternoon of Sunday 4th October I was transported to the starting point at Honley Woods where I joined 11 other walkers and 2 dogs (one quite large, Barney and one very small, Charlie).  It was a beautiful, warm, sunny afternoon when Jenny led us off at a steady pace. As this was the 4th occasion I had joined the group I was not fazed that some members were kitted out and equipped for conquering a 20 mile section of the Pennine Way nor by one carrying a pedometer nor even by another having already completed a 6 mile race that morning.

I have no sense of direction (my school geography report once commented about me ‘He does well to find his way home’) and as I have never walked in Honley Woods before I have no idea of the precise route we took.

The walk was mainly through woodland, past a dam, across fields, over the occasional stile and hardly ever on a metalled road.  The route was carefully chosen to avoid steep gradients, the only hazard being the risk of treading on or being tripped up by the exuberant Charlie.  There was ample time to chat with and get to know better members of the group.  After about an hour and a half the sky became overcast and it started to rain but moments later, as if by magic or divine intervention, we arrived back at our starting point.

The walk was about 3 miles and was a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon in autumn.  So, if you are a ‘stroller’ like me, why not join the group on its next walk around Skelmanthorpe on the afternoon of Sunday 6th December.

Ten People And Three Dogs

Parish Walks

(as opposed to one man and his dog!) set off from Kirkburton Health Centre on Sunday 6th September, for a lovely walk around the area.  We started by going up a path to the left side of the Church and through the wood until we met Penistone Road, which we crossed and dropped down to the bottom of another wood.  On the right the field had lots of rabbits which the dogs were interested in.  On the left were goats and geese.  We then climbed up the wood and onto open fields.  The weather was just right for walking.  Dropping down toward the stream, the dogs enjoyed getting wet and soaked us as they shook themselves dry.

We stumbled across The Woodman Inn - what a coincidence!  Who had brought any money with them?!  Fortunately John Hirst and my friend (also called Clare) came to the rescue, so it was cold drinks for everyone. Thank you for that!

After our short stop for refreshments it was back through the bottom of Storthes Hall woods, with the dogs doing their usual in the stream.  Back up the hill to Penistone Road, across the road and up another hill back to the Health Centre.  We arrived back at 4.20pm having had a really good walk.

We look forward to seeing you next time.
